Of course it might just blow over. The European parliament is renowned for its muscle-flexing talents, matched only by its ability to retreat timidly to the dressing room when the real action is about to start.

But the Rocco Buttiglione affair could yet escalate into a full scale bust-up between the three corners of the EU's institutional triangle.
