Sony’s game unit on Tuesday announced it would launch the latest model of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld machine in Japan to better compete with Nintendo’s market-leading DS.

The new model, first unveiled in Leipzig in August and featuring a built-in microphone and advanced LCD display that is better suited for outdoor use, is set to be launched on October 1 in Japan, in time for the year-end shopping season.
