Brazil oil field poised to transform economy

The Brazilian government believes it is sitting on reserves of between 40bn and 50bn barrels of oil in recently discovered fields off the country's coast in the South Atlantic, Guido Mantega, the country's finance minister, has told the Financial Times.

If proven, the reserves would transform Brazil from a nation self-sufficient in oil but a minor player in the global industry into one of the world's big oil powers.
